Lay your guitar on your lap. The three strings nearest you are the bass strings; these are played by the thumb. The other three are the treble strings and they are played by fingers 1,2 and 3.
Normally the three lowest (bass) strings are used for these although ocassionally the G string (string 3) might creep in.
